Há palavras que nos beijam

Mariza Mariza Mariza Mariza Mariza by ClydeHouse It’s not unusual to find that something which seemed heavenly on holiday does not in fact travel well.  That could be a local liqueur or gastronomic speciality, a few yards of fabric, or a folk music CD.

Perhaps partly because I first came across Mariza in the UK, her take on fado (Portuguese folk / blues would be a very rough approximation) is definitely improving with each hearing.  More likely, though, Mariza’s own style and ability to connect with an audience - and her work outside Portugal - are making this hauntingly beautiful form very accessible.  Fado, as what is patronisingly called World Music, is reasserting its own place on the world stage.

Crash & Burn

I was so impressed with this slideshow by A. Jeremy P. Lawrence that I have been unable to stop myself jumping on the blog wagon.  Have a look here (with sound on):

Crash & Burn

Thanks to Roger B for first drawing it to my attention.

I was passing Gatecrasher on my way to a non-existent (which was lucky, I’d have been no use whatsoever) film quiz about 45 minutes after the fire started.  Walking up t’Moor a few minutes earlier I’d entered the cloud of smoke - there was plenty - and it was good to get upwind of it.

Saw outallnight exiting The Rutland to take this.  I was camera-less.

Kitty

I don’t often talk about work but I thought I’d make an exception.

In thinking about what we should do at work to promote World Mental Health Day (10 Oct), I remembered Kitty’s idea.  I may well take that up.  (Pay attention 16 seconds in.)

OK - I admit it, I just wanted to indulge myself with a Kitty moment.  But that’s the comprehensive system for you.

More Kitty:

“So I leaned over, poked her in the cleavage with a pastry fork and asked, ‘What’s that terrible smell?’ She said, ‘It’s Ma Griffe‘. I said, ‘Well, it wants washing!’”

If anyone knows of any more Kitty on the net - especially “What do you think of Marx?…” - then please do let me know - for my highbrow research of course.
