The goods have been received. They had a bit of a bumpy ride but have arrived in one piece.
Last night, the UK House of Lords held the last vote on the new goods and services protections for England, Wales and Scotland.
The Lords supported the regulations by 168 votes to 122 and they become effective from 30 April. (Previous legislation for Northern Ireland came into effect on 1 January and was unsuccesfully challenged later that month.)
There has been a vicious campaign by Christians demanding the right to turn away vulnerable people from their services because they are gay. My perception is that most people see how “un-Christian” that is but it appears some vocal church-goers need to get themselves on and Alpha course to learn WWJD?
Ah well, this is another stage completed on a road unimaginable to many of us 20 years ago. It’s not a magic wand but it is a set of important protections.
And, in the wider context it’s a further positive boost to equality in the UK generally. I wonder why, at Mama’s & Leonie’s, all the waiters are waitresses and always of a certain type - white; the chefs are always men - and white - and all the pot washers are always… er.. black women.
Let me be sentimental for a mo please - I’d just like to think this is another reason to be hopeful that we, across the world, can one day respect each other without being forced to.
